Become a Metro Moms Magazine writer!
Beginning in September, the Metro Mom Expo will become part of the Metro Moms Network, home of the Hoboken Mom Consulting Network and the Metro Moms magazine. We will be highlighting mom-owned businesses and services that help ease the burdens of urban parenting. To meet the Metro Moms team, please come to a monthly Mom Consulting Network luncheon.
We are looking for writers who have a unique angle into urban parenting. If you are interested in writing for the Metro Moms mag, submit a sample below in your area(s) of expertise. Submissions need to be focused on an urban audience but other than that we are open to ideas. Would love to know how food coops like Purple Dragon work, pediatrician experiences, etc.
We are currently looking for two types of writers: businesses that can help people figure out parenting (unpaid) and editorial/opinion (paid). To be considered for our September 1 launch, please submit a piece by August 1, 2011. Haven’t worked out the compensation scale yet but we are paying for editorial and opinion pieces ![]()
7/7/ UPDATE: Have been getting questions regarding business writing versus editorial/opinion pieces. Here is the deal: if you are going to be promoting your own business in your writing, then you are a business writer.
An opinion piece would be similar to the Mile Square Parenting column I write for Hoboken Patch. I am not allowed to write about any of my marketing clients or businesses on it (although there is a bit of a gray area since I have written about the Mom Consulting Network. But since I don’t derive any income directly from the Network it has passed muster). You can see examples of my Hoboken Patch column at http://hoboken.patch.com/columns/mile-square-parenting
Hope this helps clear up any confusion! And you can use the same submission application to submit for either category.

Raffle prizes multiplying like bunnies in spring
HUGE thank you to our incredibly supportive exhibitors, everyone I have spoken with keeps asking when the next Metro Mom Expo is so they can participate.
Hand in Hand Pediatrics dropped off a bunch of mugs last night, Dr. Robin Lucas left a TON of toothbrushes & dental kits, World of Wonder gave an AWESOME gift basket; weren’t we supposed to have FEWER raffle prizes a week after the event?
So here’s the deal; leave a comment on this post saying what you would like to see at the next Expo (make sure to include your email address, no registration required) and we will include you in the online drawing to be held next week. Here’s your chance to win awesome swag like a weeklong membership to Sky Club Fitness (gotta love that pool in this hot weather), diapers, chocolates & more. With prizes like literally HUNDREDS of Liberty Science Center passes, winning is virtually guaranteed! The raffle drawing will take place on Friday 6/24 at 10AM, with all entries accepted up to the moment of drawing. You get one raffle entry for every comment, so comment to win (maximum five per person)!

UPDATE: Entry into the raffle drawing is free. We sold a few tickets at the 6/11 Metro Mom Expo (about $50 worth) to subsidize the discounted exhibitor tables (members of the Hoboken Mom Consulting Network received a 90% discount to fill the first half of the available spots) but the overwhelming majority of tickets were free (included in ticket price).
All of the attendees and exhibitors will be given two entries in the raffle drawing next week, along with additional entries for the few people who purchased tickets. With several hundred raffle prizes to give away (people literally keep dropping them off and giving them to me wherever I go, even a week after the Expo), the odds are very good that everyone will win at least one prize. It’s great low-cost advertising for the exhibitors since all the prizes are detailed on Mom Expo website and the staff is working on writeups to roll out over the next few months (the screened babysitting service was a huge hit at the Expo, I am helping the owner develop her website and put together an online timesheet with credit card processing).
Metro Mom Expo coverage in Hoboken Patch
“People are overwhelmed with parenting,” Zucker said. “We want to give them a place to get their questions answered in a friendly environment.” Zucker explained that while some aspects of parenting are time-tested, others such as what sort of stroller to buy fall into flux whenever product designs change.

6/11 Expo recap, exhibitor news & online RAFFLE PRIZES
Thank you to everyone who helped make the 6/11 Metro Mom Expo such a great event. I spoke to a number of attendees who really liked the comprehensive variety of exhibitors and made some useful contacts throughout the day. This was also an excellent networking event for everyone present.
As with all things in life, there were pros and cons to the day. The turnout was decent but many people who planned to attend and actually purchased tickets did not come because they went away for the weekend despite the rainy forecast. We will be issuing complimentary tickets to the next Expo for those attendees, and hope the new date and time fits better with your busy schedules!
I am very pleased with the media coverage and buzz around the event. From the excellent pre-event writeups by the Hudson Reporter, Hoboken Patch & theBokenOnline, to tweets & Facebook posts from a wide variety of major players like the City of Hoboken and City Councilman Ravi Bhalla and social media posts from local bloggers and influencers.
Thanks to our generous exhibitors and sponsors, we have a TON of additional prizes to raffle off online. Donations keep pouring in, stay tuned for details about how you can participate; the odds of winning one of the great prizes are very, very high. You can email info@hudsonmomexpo.com if you would like to be notified about the upcoming online drawing.
A HUGE thank you to our sponsors; PromptMD, Serenity Relaxation Beverage and the Hoboken Mom Consulting Network came through in a big way for the event. This event would not have been possible without their support, and the feedback I got the day after the Expo is they were happy with how things went.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the Mom Expo committee members (Rebecca Farrell, Jenifer Semenza and Kim Stoke) for their professionalism, efficient planning and execution, and full application of their significant expertise to the Metro Mom Expo. I am also eternally grateful to the stalwart members of the Hoboken Mom Consulting Network for their tireless support of the event; those were a lot of postcards you ladies handed out!
